What is Lymphedema
Lymphedema is an accumulation of protein rich fluid in the space between the skin and the blood vessels. The lymphatic system becomes incapable of moving the amount of fluid back into the circulatory system. Initially, the swelling may go down temporarily with elevation. Left untreated, the skin does not get the proper nutrition and hardening of the tissues and infections can develop.
Is Lymphatic Wellness Beneficial for Everyone?
Absolutely! Your Lymphatic system is the defense network of your body. It fights to keep our body free of foreign particles, maintain fluid levels, and protect against infection. Manual Lymphatic Drainage is extremely beneficial to keep a healthy working system.
Why Does Lymphedema Occur?
Lymphedema can occur because of an undeveloped lymphatic system from birth or damage to the lymphatic system later in life. Damage to the lymphatic system occurs during orthopeadic and plastic surgery, traumatic injuries, chronic venous insufficiency and most well known, removal of lymph nodes secondary to cancer.
Lymphedema Challenges
The lymphatic system is poorly understood because there is not an easy way to measure its health like blood pressure measures the health of the circulatory system. Damage to the system can develop slowly over time, until the lymphatics can no longer collect and carry the fluid away. Lymphedema may be misunderstood in the medical community, leaving a person frustrated with their progressing problem. Certified Lymphedema Therapists are also in short supply due to their intensive training requirements and the comprehensive one-on-one therapy that is essential for success.
